Belonging to a class of potassium-sparing diuretics (water medication) Aldactone is a prescription medication that is approved by FDA. It is a steroid that works by blocking mineralocorticoid receptors (drugs that are used as adjunctive therapy). The drug also blocks androgen and progesterone. People with kidney disease or high level of potassium in blood are not supposed to take this medication. Because of its high prominence, the medication was found in the World Health organization’s list of Essential medicines that is needed for basic health system.

Medical Uses

Aldactone is majorly used in the treatment of heart failure, high Blood Pressure, hypokalemia (low potassium levels), acne in women and hormone replacement therapy for transwomen. When it is used as a combination drug, it is used in the treatment of early puberty and a neuromuscular disease, myasthenia gravis. This medicine is prescribed for use in women who notice hyperandrogenism (androgen excess), which is a symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome. Lower dosage or topical form of this med is prescribed for men and women with androgenic alopecia. The medication is also utilized to prevent strokes, kidney problems and heart attacks.

Dosage and Administration

Aldactone comes in the form of tablet that has to be consumed with water. If the person experiences upset stomach he can try taking the medicine with milk or food. As it causes frequent urination, an individual taking this medication can take it earlier to avoid urinating at bed times.  The medication is available in dosage ranging from 25mg to 100mg.

When it is taken for the treatment of hypokalemia, depending on the medical condition and age of the person he is prescribed with any of the mentioned dosage. But when the medication is prescribed for heart failure patients, 25mg of Aldactone is prescribed which may be changed depending on the tolerance of the person to the medication.

Side Effects

The side effects that arise while taking Aldactone are frequent urination, dry skin, rashes, ataxia (lack of control of normal movements performed by body), erectile dysfunction, irregularity in menstrual periods and vomiting. As the medicine reduces the androgen level, it can cause gynecomastia (enlarged breast tissue), breast tenderness and physical feminization in men. Side effects like renal failure, hyperkalemia (increased concentration of electrolyte potassium in the blood) which can be life threatening may also be caused by this medication.


This medication might interact with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids like prednisone and skeletal muscle relaxers. But these are not the only type of drug interactions that are identified as other might also occur.
