Allegra is a prescription medicine that is used to treat symptoms of allergies such as itchy nose, runny nose, itchy & watery eyes and sneezing. Currently it is available both in branded and generic formulations.
This allergy medication contains fexofenadine as its chief component and its mechanism of work is quite simple. It works to reduce the levels of histamine in the body. Histamine is naturally occurring chemical which is responsible for causing allergies in the body. It belongs to a class called antihistamines but it is regarded as the second generation antihistamine. The medicine usually shows effect within 1 hour of consumption.
Allegra can be used to alleviate the symptoms of both seasonal allergies and also allergies that occur year round. More specifically it is used for allergies associated with the upper respiratory system such as itchiness or redness of nose and eyes. These allergies can be caused either by outdoor or indoor allergens. The medicine can be used in children and adults alike. It can also be used to cure hay fever which is caused by some environmental pollutants. This medication is also approved for treating pet allergies.
Dosage and Administration
This medicine comes in the dosage strengths of 30 mg, 60 mg and 180 mg. For adults and children who are over the age of 12, the suggested dose of Allegra is 60 mg twice a day or 180 mg once a day.
Allegra should be taken along with water but it should not be taken along with food. It comes in two different variants which are intended for 24 hour application and 12 hour application.
What to do in case of missing a dose or overdose?
It is always better to take your medications on time so that you do not have to miss any dose of Allegra. If at certain circumstances, you have missed a dose, then you can take it the moment you remember. In case if it is time for you take the next dose, then you can skip the missed dose and continue your scheduled dose. If you had overdose, then call for poison helpline immediately or rush to the nearest emergency medical Centre so as to get yourself treated.
Like in every other chemical formulation side effects are also prevalent in this drug. Some people might be allergic to the main ingredient in this medication and might suffer from reactions such as shallow breathing, body aches, flu and fever. When such side effects occur a physician must be consulted at the earliest. Other common side effects that sometimes occur with the use of this drug are headache, feeling of vomiting, diarrhea, menstrual cramps and back pain. But sometimes these side effects can also be a result of sub-standard medication.
Interactions with other drugs
Drugs such as ketoconazole or erythromycin might interact with this medicine and hence you must inform your doctor if you are currently taking these medications. Drugs such as anti-depressants, sleeping aids, pain killers or sedatives can add to the sleepiness caused by the medication.
