Desyrel which is the brand name of Trazodone was approved by FDA in the year 1981 as an antidepressant that has anti-anxiety and hypnotic effects.
The pill belongs to a group of drugs called serotonin modulator that works by decreasing anxiety and insomnia related to depression, by improving the mood and energy level of the person consuming it.
As imbalance of the neurotransmitters in the brain causes depression, Desyrel works by affecting the neuro transmitters in the brain.
Desyrel is mainly used to treat problems related to depression. When the pill was first made available it was greatly welcomed for use by geriatric patients because of its minimal side effects.
It works by blocking the neurotransmitter in the central and peripheral nervous system (anticholinergic property).
This pill has anxiolytic properties and low muscle damage (cardiotoxicity) when compared to other anti-depressants. It is mostly useful for geriatric patients with insomnia, severe agitation and depression.
The efficacy of Desyrel pill was found to be similar with diazepam in terms of its anxiolytic properties when it was used in the treatment of anxiety disorders for about 3 to 8 weeks. Lower dosage of this pill can also be used as an alternative in the treatment of insomnia.
Before taking Desyrel, you have to tell to your doctor about your medical ailments like heart disease, renal diseases, bipolar disorders, glaucoma or blood pressure. You should also be sure if you had any suicidal thoughts in the past.
People who use this drug would feel dizziness as it impairs with the cognition ability. To avoid accidents, it is better not to indulge in any work that needs alertness.
If you have low potassium levels and you take this drug, the syndrome would increase.
Children and older patients are at high risk of being affected by side effects.
Woman should not take this medication when they are pregnant or lactating a baby. This is because; Desyrel might affect an unborn or born baby.
Patients might suffer from longer QT syndrome in which the heart beat would increase more than the usual. In some cases, they might faint or it would lead to any serious ill effects.
Desyrel is available for oral administration both as regular release and extended release tablets. Unlike other tablets it can be split into half based on the doctor’s prescription. But still the tablet is not supposed to be chewed, crushed or snorted.
The dosage of Desyrel medication ranges from 150 to 375 mg and the pill is used for a short term use of up to 2 weeks. The medication is supposed to be taken on a regular basis with food as prescribed by the physician either twice or more than that.
Initially low dose of Desyrel pill is prescribed which can be increased after 3 or 4 days upon consulting a doctor. Extended release of the tablet if prescribed should be taken on an empty stomach once a day at bedtime.
Below are the side effects that should be treated with much care upon occurrence.
- Panic attack
- Irregular heartbeat or difficulty in breathing
- Depression that leads to suicidal thoughts
When a person experiences any of these side effects it is better to consult a doctor immediately as it may lead to unwanted consequences if not treated on time.
Interaction of Desyrel with drugs that that treat mental illness, AIDS, heartburn and seizures are not recommended as it may cause harmful side effects.
