Atarax is the brand formulation of Hydroxyzine HCL and is used in treating itching or pruritus caused by allergies. It reduces the activity in central nervous system and also acts as an antihistamine, which helps in reducing the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine is released by cells during an injury, in allergic or inflammatory reactions. This causes contraction of smooth muscles and also dilation of capillaries. Sneezing, running nose or hives in skin are a few symptoms of Histamine.
It is also used for treating anxiety disorder. This is also used along with anesthesia in helping an individual to fall sleep or stay relaxed before or after a surgery. This drug is taken only on a short term basis.
