Cozaar is the brand formulation of losartan and it belongs to a group of angiotensin receptor blockers drugs. It is marketed by a renowned company and became the first drug to be marketed from angiotensin receptor antagonist drugs. The medication works by blocking a substance in the body that causes blood vessel to tighten, thus relaxing the blood vessels and improving blood flow. The drug can also be used in the treatment of congestive heart failure where a person’s heart isn’t functioning in the normal manner.
Being an angiotensin receptor blocker, it is utilized in the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and its adverse effects are strokes or heart attacks. The medication may also reduce the advancement of diabetic neuropathy. The normal recommended dosage of Cozaar when used in diuretic therapy is 25mg. when the medication is used in the treatment of hypertension for children above 6 years the dosage is 0.7mg that has to be taken once daily. This medicine is not advised to be taken by children below 6 years.
This medication also has some side effects like other prescription medicines. One may experience stuffy nose, depression, chest pain, diarrhea, dizziness and back pain while using Cozaar. But side effects like low blood pressure, sudden headache, chest pain and allergic reactions are rare and should be treated by a physician instantaneously.
Relative Contraindications to Cozaar
Drug interaction may happen when the activity of one drug is interfered by the other. Medicines like aspirin, naproxen, potassium sparing drugs and ibuprofen are known to interact with this drug. Also this medicine is not supposed to be taken by diabetic patients and people who are taking aliskiren.
