Fasigyn is an anti-infective agent and is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections and other microorganisms known as protozoa. It comprises of the active ingredient tinidazole which is again the generic name of fasigyn. The drug works by entering into the bacteria and protozoal cells and interferes with the genetic materials i.e. DNA. It works by damaging the DNA and also intercepts protozoa and bacteria to form new DNA. The microorganisms get killed and the infection is then cleared up. It is an antibiotic belonging to a group of drugs known as nitroimidazoles.

Medical Uses

Fasigyn is used to treat bacterial and parasitic infections that are caused by susceptible bacteria protozoan. They are also used to treat various other infections like male and female genital system infections, bowel and liver, prevent infections that can occur during surgery.

Taking Fasigyn can cure the infections that can happen in skin, chest, blood, lung, genitals, infection that is associated with stomach ulcers, gum infections, bacterial infection of the respiratory tract like pneumonia or lung abscesses

Dosage and Administration

Fasigyn 500 mg tablets can be swallowed as a whole with a glass of water irrespective of having food or without food. You can take the pills probably once or twice each day, but the timing should be at the same time each day. It can be taken for two to three days if you take high doses of the drug or continue the pill for five to seven days if you take lower dosage of the pill.

The dosage however depends upon person to person, age and their response to the medication. Usage of these pills are encouraged only until the infection has cleared up, long term use of fasigyn is generally not encouraged. Follow the guidelines formulated by the physician carefully so as to prevent any unwanted health complications.

Side Effects

Before taking fasigyn, it is necessary that you know about the side effects. Contact your doctor immediately if you get sudden wheezing, breathing difficulties, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, eyelids, fits or seizures.

  • Trouble to urinate
  • Seizures, hives
  • Racing heartbeats
  • Red spots on skin
  • Black or tarry stools
  • Chest pain
  • Lower back ache

Interaction with other drugs

Do not take fasigyn if you are also if you are on a course of treatment with disulfiram. Alcohol containing products like cough syrup, cold syrups, aftershave lotions or products that contain propylene glycol, lopinavir or ritonavir solution, lithium can all easily interact with this drug.

Speak to your doctor if you are using hormonal birth control while you are taking fasigyn. Speak to your doctor before you use any other medication.

One should not drink alcohol while being on fasigyn and for at least three days after the treatment ends. Inform the health care professional if you have been taking certain medications to treat underlying health condition so that drug interactions can safely be averted.
