Grifulvin V

Grifulvin is an anti-fungal medication that is used to treat fungal infections originating from different parts of the body. It is made in both liquid form and tablet form.

The medicine must be used for several weeks to notice improvement in the symptoms. Infections related to the nail may take several months to heal.

In specific Grifulvin is used to treat redness, itching or scaling of skin that are triggered due to a fungal infection. It can be used for jock itch, ringworm, fungal infections on the scalp, athlete’s foot and toenail infection. But bear in mind that it is only used for fungal infections and not bacterial infections.

If taken properly it effectively hinders the growth of fungi in the body. Usually this medicine is used when creams or lotions are not able to treat the infection. One should not take this medicine if they are allergic to grifulvin or suffering from any liver diseases. Even pregnant women must exercise caution before taking the medicine.

When you use the medication, your skin would be more sensitive to sunlight. So, avoid going under direct sunlight.

In case, you wanted to go out then you can use sunscreen with SPF 30 at least 15 minutes before starting.

You should avoid pregnancy or to impregnate at least one month after the completion of the treatment. Do not take this medication while pregnant or nursing a baby.


Grifulvin medicine comes in the form of tablets as well as an oral suspension. The dosage suggestion of the tablet depends on the type of infection.

It is important to identify the type of fungus that is infecting the body in order to determine the exact the dosage in which the medicine should be taken. Never take the Grifulvin medicine longer than the duration specified to you by the doctor.

Shake the oral suspension well before taking it with the help of a measuring spoon provided with the product or a syringe. The tablet version can be crushed and mixed with applesauce at times when it is difficult to swallow it.

Missing a dose and Overdose

There are chances that you would miss a Grifulvin dose. Take the missed one as soon as you remember. But, when you are about to take the next dose, you should avoid taking the missed one.

You should not increase the dosage strength to compensate with the missed dose. This would only lead to drug overdose thus aggravating ill effects.

Side effects

Any allergic reactions arising from the use of Grifulvin medicine must be checked with a doctor immediately. The signs of allergic reactions include swelling of the face including lips, mouth and tongue. It is not advised to take this pill if you have had any allergic reactions from it in the past. Other common side effects include

  • headache,
  • itching,
  • upset stomach,
  • insomnia,
  • diarrhea.

Relative Contraindications

Any drug interactions happening with the intake of Grifulvin medicine may either reduce the effectiveness of this medicine or reduce the effectiveness of the other medicine or in the worst case lead to unwanted side effects. Hence discuss with a doctor about the drugs that might interact with this medicine.
