Ilosone or erythromycin is a part of drugs called macrolide antibiotics that aids in the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections. It which was manufactured by Eli Lilly was approved by FDA in the year 1967. It generally works by terminating the bacteria from replicating the proteins that are required for them to last or function in a proper manner. Erythromycin was isolated from bacteria Saccharopolyspora erythraea in the year 1952 and was listed as the most important medication that is needed in the routine usage by World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines.
Ilosone is majorly used to paralyze the food particles in stomach that remain for prolonged duration. The pill can even be used during pregnancy to prevent the infection that is occurring in the new born. Infections like syphilis, pneumonia, respiratory tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases are also treated with the help of this pill. An eye ointment of this category pill is routinely used post-delivery, to eliminate neonatal conjunctivitis (eye infection that occurs in new born).
Dosage and Administration
This medication is available in the form of cream, gel, tablet, drops and also as a solution that can be injecting into the veins. The dosage of Ilosone varies depending on the condition of infection. Usually the initial dosage ranges from 250 to 500mg and the dosage interval depends on the dosage strength. Once the person is on treatment he is advised to finish the entire course to reduce the possibilities of getting the infection back.
General Precautionary advice
Before commencing the treatment, you have to consult with a doctor and know about the root cause of your allergy reactions. The doctor after examining your condition would prescribe this medication accordingly.
You are not supposed to take Ilosone for treating prophylaxis or to prevent any condition.
Prior to giving this medication to a child, the infections should be carefully considered and you have to commence the therapy only if the condition is very strong.
Pregnant ladies and nursing women those who are affected by these bacterial infections should analyze the risks and benefits of them as well as fetus or baby before taking the drug.
Common side effects like itching, rashes, hearing loss, unusual tiredness or weakness, skin rash, yellow eyes, slower heartbeat, nausea, stomach pain and dizziness may happen in the beginning which may subside over time. If side effects like inflammation in the liver, hallucinations, abdominal pain or vomiting occurs it is better to consult the physician and get treated immediately.
Always check for any change in the behavior or health condition. Check if the change persists for a longer period. If the effects go away it is not a problem but if it stays then this is when you have to get medical assistance.
Interactions with other drugs
People taking erythromycin are supposed to consult their doctor immediately as they are not advised to take these pills together with Ilosone.

- HIV medications like sustiva
As these drugs are found to react with erythromycin it is strictly not recommended to take them together. Also the person taking this medication is not supposed to drive as the pill can cause blurred vision.
