Nizoral is an antifungal treatment medicine that has ketoconazole as its chief ingredient. It belongs to the class of azole antifungus and its prime goal is to stop the multiplication and growth of fungus.
It is a potent chemical formulation and hence needs to be used with care. When you approach a doctor to get a prescription tell him if you suffer from any liver problems, a family history of QT syndrome or problems with adrenaline gland.
Nizoral can be used to treat various fungal infections in the body. Some of these infections can even be serious and pose a real threat. This medicine can even be used to beat such serious fungal infections as well. But it is not intended for treating fungal infections in the toes and fingernails.
It can also not be used for fungal infections in the brain and on the skin. Nizoral medicine should be used as a last resort when other anti-fungal medications fail to show effect. This is because in some people this medicine can cause serious lung infections and can even lead to death.
Nizoral comes in the form of a tablet that can be consumed with or without food. But it should not be consumed with antacid. It should either be taken 1 hour before or 1 hour after taking antacid.
If taken together the absorption rate of Nizoral will be reduced greatly. A 200 mg of this pill should be taken daily to notice a significant difference in 6 months’ time.
If the degree of cure is insufficient then the dose can be increased to a maximum of 400 mg. Always take Nizoral medicine based only on the stipulations provided by the doctor. The dosage strength is equivalent for both branded medicine and generic medicine.
Some common side effects such as nausea or headache may occur in the initial stages of using Nizoral medicine. Monitor these effects and if they do not ward off after a while inform your health care facilitator about your condition.
Other serious side effects such as,
- severe dizziness,
- loss of appetite,
- stomach pain,
- headache with chest pain
You must get urgent medical attention if you notice any serious side effects.
Nizoral interacts with many prescription and non-prescription medications and hence any drugs you take along with this medicine such as antibiotics must get an approval from the doctor.
Some drugs interactions might not necessarily result in side effects but they will reduce the efficiency of this medicine.
